Special report: Why was Iraq the first destination for President Pezeshkian to visit?
The Islamic Republic of Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian chose Iraq as his first foreign trip and in a sensitive situation with his tenure, the policies of the new government is inclined to move towards resuming talks with the west instead of strengthening ties with the neighboring countries.
According to Negah-e No report, when asked about the goals of Masoud Pezeshkian’s trip to Iraq, some media outlets portrayed it as if the only motive and objective of his visit to Iraq was to pilgrimage to the holy shrines, particularly the blessed shrine of Imam Ali (PBUH) in Najaf Ashraf. Although if we accept this as the sole motivation, it still carries significant points and many messages.However, the reality is different. Mr. President went to Iraq because he is aware of the opportunities ahead, the expansion of relations with Iraq, and the use of economic markets and political cooperation between neighbouring countries and Iraq.Today, Iraq forms the Arab and Islamic depth of the Islamic Ummah, which after October 7th has maintained strong and solid positions against Israel in all political currents.Due to its Arab and Islamic nature, Iraq is close to Iran and shares many commonalities with it, while also having ethnic and Arab connections with its surrounding Arab environment.
