Behind the Scene of the Election of New Lebanon’s President; Pressures and Coalitions

The election of General Joseph Aoun as Lebanon’s president after 27 months of political vacuity is a significant change in the country; an election that occurred under foreign pressures in particular, the USA and Saudi Arabia.
. According to Negaheno report although the result of the election was to some extend released under foreign pressures in particular, the USA and Saudi Arabia but the national coalition (Hezbollah and Amal) played a key role with conditions such as national governance and economic reconstruction. With his military background Aoun is now faced with many challenges, i.e., managing foreign relations and encountering Israel’s threats. His presidency can provide an opportunity for reconstructing public trust and moving towards stability but his success will depend on his ability to consolidate political consensus and to deal with internal and foreign crises. The regional changes in particular, in Syria and the upcoming visit of Emanuel Macron to Lebanon would reiterate on the situations facing Aoun. He should find balance between internal challenges and foreign interventions in this difficult road ahead.
