Iraq and post- elections:Participation increased after 20 years

Despite leader of the Iraq’s Shiite national stream Moghtada Sadr boycotting the election, the rate of participation in the election which had taken a plunging record since 2005 reaching from 70% participation in 2005 to 42 % participation in 2021 has now increased by 13 % to a rising rate of 55%.

According to New Visiona report the rate of participation in the special election which took place on Sunday was more than 80 % with a rise of about 20% as compared to the previous years. The Sunni streams specially the Taghadom party led by Mohammed Al-Halbousi, the former speaker of Iraqi parliament and the coalition of Al-Siadeh led by Khamis Al-Khanjar have had a tight and wide competition.

Moghtada Sadr’s plans to discredit and undermine the political procedures of the election and to bring tension and unrest within the political atmosphere post the election also failed. There is low chance that the election of the speaker of parliament, the president and the prime minister will be delayed and Iraq will experience a relatively peaceful atmosphere post- election.
